Stich Witchery is nothing more than a mega crafts session with the who’s who of Starry Falls—exclusively women at this point, unless you count Mud playing bartender with the whiskey. The library, though adorned with more pumpkins, gossamer ghosts, and witches’ brooms than should ever be allowed, is a fully functioning book depository, which acts more as a lending library flooded with adorable little kitties hiding in every nook and cranny.

The elongated table in the center is draped with Battenberg lace, and the marble counter at the front of the room is covered with gorgeous bone china teapots, cups, and saucers—each as dainty as can be with gilded handles and spouts and delicate flowers dotting just about every last one of them.

Opal was the first to add a touch of comfort to her tea—read whiskey. And once I spotted her juicing up her beverage, I came up with the brainstorm to offer comfort to anyone who needed it, for a small fee, of course. Suffice it to say, this entire town is in need of some serious comfort, and it just so happens to be our biggest moneymaker, too.

A thick crowd of women bustles in, and soon the table is covered with knitting needles, cross-stitching hoops, and enough yarn to knit a blanket big enough to cover this newly haunted manor.

Just the thought of seeing Hazel Newton’s ghost—anyone’s ghost—makes me shiver.

Opal strides in with a cat in each arm and quickly makes her way to the women already bickering about who knows what as the noise volume in the room rises. Usually Stitch Witchery is held in the evenings, but since the Haunted Hallow-whiskers Ball must go on, the library will be needed in a few short hours to scare the pants off the tiny tots of this town.

Stephanie migrates over with one of my cross-stitch hoops in her hand.

“Hey, where’d you get that?” I ask, pulling over my latest work of art. It’s a picture of a cat playing with a ball of yarn with the word MEOW just below it. “I’m getting ready to send this to Uncle Vinnie. It lets him know—”

“You’re alive. We’ve covered this, remember?” She squints as she leans in close and looks into my eyes. “Boy, Regina really did a number on your gray matter. If Shep thought you were dingy before, he’s in for a real treat.” She plucks my project right out of my hands.

“Shep doesn’t think I’m dingy. Shep thinks I’m hiding something,” I hiss. “He’s onto me, Steph. He knows I have a secret. What do I do?”

She twitches her lips. “I don’t know. Tell him.” She shrugs. “I told Eddie and he said it turned him on.”

“A pizza could turn that man on.” Any man, come to think about it. And let’s be honest, me too.

“I’m serious, Stella,” she says my name lower than a whisper. “Sharing something like that could bring the two of you closer. And if you’re really serious about him, imagine how he’ll feel
